The word taggant generally means microscopic, molecular or nano materials that are uniquely encoded specific to a customer or application and are very difficult if not impossible to replicate. A security taggant is uniquely encoded specific to one customer or one application. A single taggant technology can be used for an application, or multiple taggant technologies can be utilized to create a higher level of security. For someapplications, one tagant technology is used for yes/no identification. Other applications utilize multiple unique taggant codes to identify things such as: time of manufacture for product warranty or liability, authorized production to address contract manufacturer over runs, product distributor to address gray marketing or product diversion issues, and even concentrations to verify correct loading of an active material has been incorporated in the final product. There are really countless uses for taggants. In simple terms taggants are unique identifiers which can be incorporate in or on materials or products for quick, positive field identification.
